Warre Hero
Warre's and the Symington Family recently donated bottles of Warre's 2009 Vintage Port to support Heroes at the Tower, a special event to raise funds for Help for Heroes, Combat Stress and the Chapel of St. Peter ad Vincula at the Tower of London.
600 guests attended the event at the Tower of London, which, in addition to a special drinks reception and elegant dinner, included entertainment from the Band of the Royal Marines and a special appearance by the Phantom of the West End production of Phantom of the Opera, who sang numbers from the show and admitted he was captivated by the historic atmosphere of the White Tower and the Broad Walk. The guests also enjoyed a private viewing of the Crown Jewels and the Tower's Yoeman Warders conducting the Ceremony of the Keys.
Finally, Nick Bonham, of the auction house, personally conducted an auction of extraordinary gifts, including a very rare double Magnum (3 litre bottle) of the Warre's 2009 Vintage Port, as well as six individual bottles. The event raised over £150,000 for the charities.
Earlier this year Symington Family Estates released a select - 500 cases only - bottling of a 2009 Warre's Vintage Port to commemorate the anniversary of the freedom of Porto in 1809, when William Warre played a prominent role among the combined English and Portuguese forces that drove the French out of Porto. For every case of wine sold in the UK £48.00 will be donated to the British charity Help for Heroes, and a similar sum will be donated to Liga dos Combatentes for every case sold in Portugal.
